The Virtual Court

More than benefiting the masses, advancing technology is becoming dangerous in the hands of miscreants. Increased smart – the use of social media platforms has spread through phones and computers. It is becoming a forum for spewing hatred, publishing reports of human rights abuses mainly by victims themselves with immunity and almost open approval of political parties or social groups or organizations rather than using the sites for communicating information or decent debate. The very famous phrase, Trial by Media is prevailing and going on very well through the social media. It has the power to make the innocent guilty and vice-versa. This is a clear sight of human rights violation. The social media is not authorized to conduct trials or to give verdicts. It can be used in a healthy way to conduct debates or to give out opinions but not to decide the fate of a person. Although fake news and fake videos have also helped fuel group violence, they were often “celebrating” in nature: participants claiming to be part of the mob involved in lynching and crime. When content shared on social media presents a danger to society, it becomes necessary to control, and people’s responsibility as well as those posting it. More than 20 crore people in India use WhatsApp and even more Facebook. Thus, it is easy to spread fake news rumors. Even real incidents posted on social media have caused several deaths of innocent persons. The blatant posting of videos showing gross abuses of human rights represents apathy for the administration and fearlessness of offenders committing horrors and shamelessly loading them into social media. Is the social media trying to be a new serial killer or a technologically advanced virtual court? It only takes a second to rip of the reputation of a person, while gaining it may need an effort of the lifetime.
